The Pro-Life Movement

Image
Figure One What does being pro-life mean? Being pro-life means not supporting abortion. Where some pro-lifers differ are the conditions in which abortion is allowed. Some hard-liners disagree with abortion in its entirety. While more moderate pro-lifers agree the abortion is okay in cases of rape or incest or in life-threatening cases.  The basis for this argument is centered around the belief that abortion is responsible for the death of infants. How present is the pro-life movement on campus?  The student organizations like Penn State Students for Life. Penn State Students for Life is a college branch of the organization Students for Life. This is a national pro-choice organization that aims to create a new generation of supporters. Their audience is mainly college students and they usually have tabling in the HUB on Friday afternoons. During tabling sessions, members answer questions or tell their fellow students about what they believe in.  They ha...

Pro-choice, pro-freedom

Feminism and the abortion debate are intertwined. Just to clarify, feminism is the advocacy for women's rights based on equality for the sexes (Google).  I found that when I was researching the pro-choice movement I found that feminist ideals could not be separated from the pro-choice movement. People that claim that they are pro-choice, are in support of a women's choice on whether or not she wants to have an abortion. This freedom of choice is a major component in believing in the taking part in the pro-choice movement. Think of it like this:  Since women should be equal to men, and men have the right to choose when they want to have children. Then, women should have the right to choose when they want to have children. Women's Rights Associations such as a NOW( National Organization for Women) have been supporting a woman's right to choose since 1967 (around the time of the Roe v. Wade case). NOW was the first national organization that supports ...

The Not so Black and White Controversy Over Abortion

Abortion has been a controversial issue prior to the Roe v. Wade case. First off, we need to get a clear idea about what abortion is. According to Google abortion is "the termination of a pregnancy by removing the fetus/ embryo before it can survive outside the uterus. "If you have ever heard about abortion in the news people that oppose it commonly throw around the term " baby killer" or "murder". Terms such as this perpetuate the tension between those that are pro-life and those who are pro-choice. The terms "pro-life" and "pro-choice" in its self can be contentious. Why does this issue cause so much controversy among Americans? The people that receive abortions are not to be degraded by the terms mentioned above. There are many reasons why women get abortions. Although, the majority of women that receive abortions are those that do not intend to have a child there are other reasons women have abortions. There are social...

Food Waste: The Beginnings

Food is all around us from the highly distracting food videos that we see scrolling through our feed to the smells of the expensive food in the Hub, to the food ads that are literally everywhere, but how much of it do we actually eat? I admit don't eat all the food that I get in the dining hall. I'll take up what looks good and end up eating half of it and tossing the rest away. My blog will focus on the issue of food waste and how it is impacting us.  I also hope to find nuanced conservation practices, in the hopes of finding ways to reduce the food that we waste. The following is a brief set of literature reviews...  This analyzes the amount of food Americans waste annually and how the food can potentially be used as an energy source. In 2007, is stated that the United States wasted around 760 billion dollars on food and about 27% of that food was edible. The article describes the food as not only a source of nourishment but, a source of energy; this is a result of t...
