Food Waste: The Beginnings
Food is all around us from the highly distracting food videos that we see scrolling through our feed to the smells of the expensive food in the Hub, to the food ads that are literally everywhere, but how much of it do we actually eat? I admit don't eat all the food that I get in the dining hall. I'll take up what looks good and end up eating half of it and tossing the rest away. My blog will focus on the issue of food waste and how it is impacting us. I also hope to find nuanced conservation practices, in the hopes of finding ways to reduce the food that we waste.
The following is a brief set of literature reviews...
This analyzes the amount of food Americans waste annually and how the food can potentially be used as an energy source. In 2007, is stated that the United States wasted around 760 billion dollars on food and about 27% of that food was edible. The article describes the food as not only a source of nourishment but, a source of energy; this is a result of the food industry mainly using fossil fuels in its production. The shift to the automation of agricultural processes, the use of fertilizers, and pesticides have resulted in the burgeoning use of fossil fuels in the food industry. The food industry utilizes around 10.5% to 14.5% of the yearly food consumption. In recent years, the food industry has been criticized for its copious use of fossil fuels due to its emissions of harmful chemicals. Only one-tenth of food energy wasted was used for recycling and water consumption. This article is heavily based on calculations and statistics to support its claims. The food wasted in the agricultural industry is 1240 70 billion dollars. The amount of energy wasted in the food industry increases annually. The article analyzes the information presented in the charts that are placed within the article. The United States wastes millions of energy in the waste of food.
FAO.,(2012)The Role of Producer Organizations in Reducing Food Loss and
Waste,http://www.fao.org/docrep/016/ap409e/ap409e.pdf
Globally, 1.3 billion tonnes of food is wasted every year. More-Developed countries MDCs have the tendency to waste more energy than Lower-Developed countries. Most of the food wasted occurs in between the time it's harvested to the time it's in stores. Typically, in between these stages is thrown out. Due to, poor transportation of goods, substandard storage conditions, lack of efficiency in the processing and production of food. The author proves that there is a positive correlation between food loss and the deterioration of quality. Food is also wasted by the consumer. American consumer wastes are more than any other consumer. The author makes generalizations in their statements, making it hard for the reader to question the validity of the author's statements. As one continues to read the article, they may notice that with additional facts about the prevention of food waste and references to statistics, the author improves their credibility. The FAO is trying to invent machines that are more efficient to prevent food waste in manufacturing.
Krishna, P.,(2017,), India Wastes As Much Food As United-Kingdom Consumes: Study http://businessworld.in/article/India-Wastes-As-Much-Food-As-United-Kingdom-Consumes-Study/27-08-2017-124858/
Although millions of people in India go to bed hungry food is wasted profusely. Special social events such as weddings, birthdays, and family functions with their lavish and seemingly-endless assortment of food have the tendency to waste perfectly good food. Eventually, 40% of the food India produces is wasted sooner or later. Around 50,00 crore is wasted a year this about 8 billion dollars. This also contributes to India’s deterioration in air quality due to the toxins that rotting food creates. In India, most food is lost during its harvest and post-harvest. This food wasted contributes to the malnourishment of millions. The author presents information and uses it to back the author’s claim. The author is credible because they present facts and analysis to support one central claim.
